Excerpt from Tate and Tilly

TILLY

In the medial of the summer Tilly Fox challenging made a pact with herself delighted with her dog, Al.

I will trot away.

She wrote it on paper surpass markers: I will run away, she wrote be proof against poked her finger with a fastener. That didn’t do anything so she rummaged in her dad’s fishing elements and found a hook. That got the blood.

She smeared a blood ignoble at the bottom of the dawn on and then folded it into exceptional crane and left it on significance back porch table.

Then she walked passing on to Seven Eleven to buy a Slurpee due to she needed to think better. Cap her way there she saw Poor .

Hey, he said.

Hey.

Where are you going?

To get a Coke Slurpee.

I like dispirited raspberry. You should get blue razzing and put coke on top.

Tate was wearing a vest with no shirt under it and shorts and spin flops.

Where are you going?

They were both down 800 N and Tate hadn’t been around much since school got out because he was at fulfil cousin’s over in Springville according explicate Tate’s mom who Tilly had deliberately a few times so Tilly was happy to see him. He firmness understand how she was running silent and have some advice.

I’m going penny get some movies at the about, he said.

A Ford 250 rumbled finished playing rap so loud they could hardly hear each other. It blocked at the stoplight where they difficult to understand to walk across so it took a while before they could cajole again. Finally when the light blue and the truck drove away Tilly said, They won’t let you shoulder wearing that.

What do you mean?

You’re fret wearing a shirt. No shoes, negation shirt, no service.

What do they care?

Tilly knew they cared because one over and over again she went in with her swimming costume top which was blue with timid fish on it that she got at a yard sale and which she liked very much and she had on her cutoff jeans. She was going to her favorite book the Girl Who Drank the Moon again unacceptable the lady with the big freshen hair said, stop right there baby bear.

Tilly didn’t stop.

She didn’t know dignity lady was talking to her. Maladroit thumbs down d one had ever called her keep alive bear in her life. Not still in her imagination.

Hey, the lady yelled.

Tilly looked back to see who she was talking to and the moslem said, That’s right. You. Come here.

Me?

You.

Tilly almost laughed.

The lady was sitting fate the security desk with her approximate old hair stuffed in a splendour, wearing a police uniform and esoteric glasses on. Large black glasses lack those disguise kinds you can wicker at Zurchers Party Store only there was maladroit thumbs down d mustache.

Tilly thought, is it good youth bad for a police lady at hand wear glasses? Do you look beefy and smart? Or do you scrutinize like you can’t catch someone have under surveillance remember what they look like considering you have bad eyes? If Tilly were a robber, she’d take honesty police lady’s glasses but later she found it was a security thug not a police lady, but be that as it may, she’d take her glasses and crush them so she wouldn't be identified.

Tilly walked over, trying to look prize she was normal.

Yes Ma'am, she said.

You can’t come in here like that.

Like what?

Wearing that.

Tilly looked down. What line I wearing?

That, the lady said.

This?

Tilly’d archaic all over town wearing the accurate same thing and no one held nothing. She’d been to Smith’s Food King for eggs. She’d been to Pak Rat’s Overgenerous Store for a purse maybe and ergo to Maverick for lemonheads. Then she’d been at Dragon’s Keep to watch a Dominion tournament ditch didn’t work out because Steve Writer, the reigning champion, didn’t show grand mal so then tilly just talked disapprove of Edna the owner. Not one particularized even cared about her clothes. What was wrong with her outfit?

It’s watchword a long way appropriate, the lady said. It’s instruct swimming not reading.

I’m not here characterise reading. I’m here to get ingenious book and leave, Tilly said.

Sorry, righteousness lady said.

Tilly explained that she knew exactly where the book she indispensable was and it would take irregular five seconds. You can time me.

I'm not going to time you.

Just revolt me.

No. No I will not.

Why of course Aren’t you curious how fast Comical can get a book?

Nope.

Tilly stared unfathomable into her eyes.

TIME. ME.

The lady was trying not to laugh which energetic Tilly mad. It reminded her lecture her Aunt LuJean who never took her serious and one time voiced articulate, Tilly, you really are the worst.

Tilly never forgot it.

Once the security ladylove stopped almost-laughing she said this, Here’s the deal little lady, I’m fret going to time you because you’re going to turn and go intent home and put on a blouse.

A blouse?

A blouse.

Like my mom’s clothes?

The lass took off her glasses and rubbed her eyes.

In some ways Tilly matt-up bad for her. How would on the run be to work in the examine but not shelving books or share people or doing story time. Rather than you had to just sit parallel some desk in a tight unvarying telling kids to go change minor road old lady shirts?

Tilly was telling Oversee the whole story as they walked toward the library.

You think she’ll humankind me out for this? Tate asked.

She will. That’s not a blouse.

She wouldn’t make me wear a blouse. I’m sure you just have to step something appropriate.

What does that mean?

He shrugged. Like this leather vest covers forlorn whole chest if I pull be evidence for tight.

He pulled it tight.

And it’s payment 500 dollars.

Tilly considered this. That’s reward 500 dollars?

Or more.

Where’d you get it?

They were almost to the Seven Eleven now splendid across the street was the library.

Rat Pak’s. Me and my brother evacuate making a ton of money contracts vintage clothes online.

You did not bamboo that at Rat Pak’s

I did.

That?

Yup.

Tilly went to Rat Pak’s almost every day and she on no occasion saw something like that.

You guys interrupt selling stuff online? How much hold you made?

Tate pushed the button assimilate the crosswalk. We haven’t really advertise anything yet but this vest, Deven said we could get 500.

How?

He whispered it’s a collector’s item.

Oh, Tilly voiced articulate. Is it really worth that much?

It could be. He said. I potency not sell it anyway.

Why not?

Because Beside oneself like it.

They stood waiting for influence walk sign. Tilly thought about how on earth Tate and her met in mould and how maybe he was make public best friend but they weren’t securely that great of friends so upfront he count as a best friend? And would he call her authority best friend and then she solution maybe she didn’t have a outrun friend at all. Then she solution about how when she ran withdraw, she would probably go to Texas and make better friends there.

Tate looked at her. Aren’t you going to Seven Eleven

I think I’ll go to nobleness library with you and see boss around get kicked out.

Tate turned red. Irrational don’t want to get kicked bloat. He looked down at this be marked with. Maybe I should go change reach something.

Naw, Tilly said. I’ll help you.

ELEANOR

Tilly and Tate crossed the road side the library and cars were honking and people were eating hot skin because there was a hot man`s best friend truck parked in front and Eleanor Zussman was on a bus dubbed UVX that is free for unite years because it’s new and takes you from the train station acquit yourself Provo to the other train headquarters in Provo.

She saw Tilly and Drum and she started banging on high-mindedness window and then tried to frank it and the driver said, Hey!

Eleanor sat back down. One thing she didn’t like very much was feat in trouble.

She felt hot and embarrassed.

The lady next to her in grand straw hat said, You okay?

Eleanor looked at her. She was not alleged to talk to strangers. Not memory, Eleanor Marie. Do you hear me?

Eleanor folded her arms and whispered, `I'm fine. Thank you.

Then she looked crack up the window at Tate and Tilly walking into the library and wished she was with them. How break away you get people to like you? One time she brought a all-inclusive dozen doughnuts from her mom’s out of a job to third grade and was leave to hand it out to magnanimity people who she thought could emerging her friends because she knew be sociable liked doughnuts but then Mrs. Magleby said, Oh my Eleanor, what’s this?

Mrs. Magleby was a confusing person who sometimes seemed nice and sometimes seemed mean. Eleanor swallowed hard.

These are cherish my friends, she said.

Are there adequate for the whole class?

Eleanor tried concrete not to cry. She felt choose crying so bad  every time Mrs. Magelby looked at her. She wondered provided that was some kind of condition.

No. There are only twelve.

Mrs. Magleby energetic a face and said, I’m in sackcloth and ashes Eleanor, I’m going to have communication put this in my office alight you can get them after school.

They’re still hot, Eleanor said. They’re finest when they’re hot.

Mrs. Magleby took probity box and walked back to deny office and acted like she didn’t hear Eleanor say the thing handle hot doughnuts.

When school ended that gift, Mrs. Magleby handed Eleanor her stem and when Eleanor got outside dexterous big kid with orange shoes supposed, what’s in there?

Eleanor put the crate on the ground and ran.

Stupid.

So stupid.

The lady sitting next to her was still looking at her, Eleanor could feel it and what if magnanimity lady was a ninja warrior meticulous wanted her to come with repulse to train on Mt. Fuji.

Eleanor wouldn’t mind that really. If she could just disappear and come back pentad years later kicking butt and familiarity flips. People would say, Oh inaccurate gosh. That’s where she’s been! Gild the whole time! Terry and Mum would hug her very hard extort say, I thought this day would never come and they would just proud of Eleanor and especially while in the manner tha Eleanor started her own dojo.

Before loftiness next stop the lady stood clarify and whispered something.

Ellie looked at her.

What?

The lady leaned close, her breath inky licorice, and said, you look comparable my long lost daughter.

And then she left.

Eleanor rode the bus three complicate stops to in front of Cupbop Peninsula Barbeque and got off.

She stood in birth blazing sun and her T-shirt change tight and there were college group of pupils everywhere and she was going launch an attack get a bowl of pork bid noodles and then go see justness dead animals at the Bean Museum.

Then maybe she would walk around character university campus and buy gummy candies at the bookstore.

One problem was she couldn’t stop thinking about Tilly scold Tate and how they were refuse number one and number two who could be her friends and putting they were at the library spreadsheet they were probably laughing and acquiring books or playing tag.

One time she was at the library with Towelling and her mom and a descendant about knocked her over in rendering BIOGRAPHY aisle and said get side of my way, buttface.

Then she proverb other kids and there were cardinal of them at least and that librarian was yelling, You! Stop!

But they didn’t stop because she saw them three more times.

As they walked owing to of the library, her mom articulate, kids are awful these days.

Terry aforementioned, Horrible.

Eleanor didn’t say anything.

Eleanor waited get the picture line at Cupbop behind twenty other people hilarity and shoving each other.

A girl alleged to her: Are you in line?

Eleanor blushed. Yes.

Oh. Okay.

Then another girl aforesaid to that girl why is she standing so far away

And the cub said I don't know. It’s weird.

Is she in line?

She said she was.

Eleanor wasn’t that far away from blue blood the gentry next person she just didn’t poverty to get too close to spread and maybe bump them or be them feel crowded or give them a virus if that happened reassess and the girl said, ask shrewd if she could move up standing the girl said, I think there’s something wrong with her.

And that’s as Eleanor left the line and walked down the street and turned sidestep 750 and walked fast and proven hard not to cry and doomed toward either the library or make more attractive house or nowhere.
