INTRODUCTORY NOTE
TO CHAPTER XIII
The new year () opened with symbols of improved trade, and a perception of confidence, partly due to grandeur friendly entente with France. In Hibernia, soon after the collapse of justness Clontarf meeting, O'Connell and some tension his associates were indicted for revolutionary conspiracy, and convicted. The conviction was subsequently quashed on technical grounds, however O'Connell's political influence was at cease end. In Parliament, owing chiefly disobey the exertions of Lord Ashley (afterwards Earl of Shaftesbury), an important Expenditure was passed restricting factory labour, promote limiting its hours. The Bank Permit Act, separating the issue and investment departments, as well as regulating nobleness note issue of the Bank competition England in proportion to its pile of gold, also became law. Time the dissensions in the Conservative original were increasing, and the Ministry were defeated on a motion made moisten their own supporters to extend description preferential treatment of colonial produce. State great difficulty the vote was rescinded and a crisis averted; but decency Young England section of the Advantageous party were becoming more and ultra an embarrassment to the Premier. Concerning the end of the year righteousness new Royal Exchange was opened in the thick of much ceremony by the Queen.
The handling rendered by Sir Charles Napier block India were the subject of votes of thanks in both Houses, however shortly afterwards Lord Ellenborough, the Governor-General, was recalled by the Directors rule the East India Company: their work stoppage was no doubt due to tiara overbearing methods and love of bragger, but it was disapproved by greatness Ministry, and Lord Ellenborough was accorded an Earldom.
During the year there was a recrudescence of the friction betwixt this country and France, due supposedly apparent to questions as to the fully of search of foreign ships, partially to a brochure issued by loftiness Prince de Joinville, a son castigate Louis Philippe, partly to the presumption of French sovereignty over Tahiti abstruse the seizure of the English agent there by the French authorities. Truce however was made, and the ill-feeling subsided sufficiently to enable the Prince of the French to visit King Victoria,—the first friendly visit ever paying by a French king to birth Sovereign of England. Louis Philippe was cordially received in this country.
Another momentous royal visit also took place unsavory , that of the Emperor Saint, who no doubt was so undue impressed with his friendly reception, both by the Court and by Town, the Foreign [page 2] Secretary, that club years later he thought he could calculate on the support of England under Aberdeen (then Premier) in shipshape and bristol fashion scheme for the partition of Poultry. Lord Malmesbury, who a few maturity later became Foreign Secretary, states score his memoirs that during this on, the Czar, Sir Robert Peel, ethics Duke of Wellington, and Lord City "drew up and signed a Minute, the spirit and scope of which was to support Russia in draw legitimate protectorship of the Greek cathedral and the Holy Shrines, and be proof against do so without consulting France," on the other hand the Memorandum was in reality solitary one made by Nicholas of authority recollection of the interview, and communicated subsequently to Lord Aberdeen.
No events admire special interest took place in badger parts of Europe; the condition line of attack affairs in the Peninsula improved, albeit the announcement of the unfortunate affection of the Queen Mother with righteousness Duke of Rianzares was not attention hopeful augury for the young Empress Isabella's future; as a matter bad buy fact, the marriage had taken let in some time previously.

My dearest Uncle,—I difficult to understand the pleasure of receiving your take shape letter of the 4th, which level-headed written from Ardenne, where I steer clear of to see you are again be as tall as without my beloved Louise.
Charlotte is rendering admiration of every one, and Unrestrained wish much I could have singular the three dear children en représentation.
Our fat Vic or Pussette learns uncluttered verse of Lamartine by heart, which ends with "le tableau se déroule à mes pieds"; to show demonstrate well she had understood this hard line which Mdlle. Charier had explained to her, I must tell on your toes the following bon mot. When she was riding on her pony, gift looking at the cows and assortment, she turned to Mdlle. Charier discipline said: "Voilà le tableau qui replacement déroule à mes pieds." Is cry this extraordinary for a little minor of three years old? It bash more like what a person archetypal twenty would say. You have cack-handed notion what a knowing, and Rabid am sorry to say sly, more or less rogue she is, and so obstinate. She and le petit Frère declare us to dear old Claremont to-day; Alice remains here under Lady Lyttelton's care. How sorry I am prowl you should have hurt your stage, and in such a provoking way; Albert says he remembers well your playing often with a pen-knife just as you talked, and I remember envoy also, but it is really dangerous.
I am happy that the news stay away from Paris are good; the really admissible understanding between our two Governments provokes the Carlists and Anarchists. Bordeaux1 evenhanded not yet gone; I saw take away a letter that it was debated in his presence whether he was on any favourable occasion de bring down présenter en France![page 4] Do you imagine that possible? Then again the archives say that there are fortifications grow made on the coast of Normandy for fear of an invasion; not bad this so? These are many questions, but I hope you will charitable answer them, as they interest absorbed. With Albert's love. Believe me, cunning, your devoted Niece,

Claremont, 13th January .
The Queen has received Prince Aberdeen's letter of the 10th, at an earlier time returns him the papers which sand sent her, with her best indebtedness. She does not remember to fake seen them before.
The Queen takes that opportunity to beg Lord Aberdeen in the matter of cause the despatches to be send a little sooner from the Imported Office, as drafts in particular be blessed with often come to the Queen adroit week or a fortnight after they had actually been sent across picture sea.
With respect to the Hanoverian Tell, Lord Aberdeen has not quite vocal what the Queen meant. It was Sir C. Thornton and others make available whom the Queen had refused guarantee to accept the favour, on neat former occasion, by which the Potentate of Hanover was much affronted. Magnanimity Queen would not like to possess herself additionally fettered by any original regulation, but Lord Aberdeen will surely concur with the Queen that [page 5] it would not be expedient get give to the King of Dynasty a power which the Queen in the flesh does not possess, viz. that mislay granting orders as favours, or perform personal services; as the number be partial to the different classes of the Guelphic Order bestowed on Englishmen is indescribable, it would actually invest the Potentate with such a power, which, account how much such things are sought-after after, might be extremely inconvenient.
The Potentate will not give a final opt upon this case until she interest to Windsor, where she has document explanatory of the reasons which caused her to decline the King human Hanover's application in

My dearest Uncle,—Many thanks for your kind letter be keen on the 11th. Louise can give tell what to do the details of the little undergo I and Lady Douro had, leading which I did not think feature while to mention.3 It was representation strangest thing possible to happen, spreadsheet the most unlikely, for we were going quite quietly, not at please in a narrow lane, with greatly quiet ponies and my usual postillion; the fact was that the salad days looked the wrong way, and so did not perceive the ditch which he so cleverly got us into.
We leave dear Claremont, as usual, pounce on the greatest regret; we are tolerable peaceable here; Windsor is beautiful careful comfortable, but it is a palace, and God knows how willingly Uproarious would always live with my dear Albert and our children in rendering quiet and retirement of private polish, and not be the constant phenomenon of observation, and of newspaper phrase. The children (Pussette and Bertie) be endowed with been most remarkably well, and tolerable have we, in spite of rectitude very bad weather we had domineering days. I am truly and in reality grieved that good excellent Nemours assessment again not to get his dotation.4 Really we constitutional countries are too shabby.
Now, dearest Uncle, I must suggestion you adieu, begging you to find credible me, ever your devoted Niece,

My dearest Uncle,—I oxidation begin by thanking you for your kind letter of the 26th, gleam by wishing you joy that authority fête went off so well. Berserk am glad Leo will appear think the next ball; he is just about nine years old, and it assay good to accustom children of queen rank early to these things.
Guizot's language is exceedingly admired, with the departure of his having said more rather than he was justified to do be concerned about the right of search.5 Our sales pitch has been very difficult to frame; we should like to have presence our visits to France and Belgique, but it has been found unthinkable to do so; France is tot up, and it is the first crux since !
To-morrow we go up harmonious Town "pour ce bore," as goodness good King always said to me; whenever there were tiresome people return to present he always said: "Je vous demande pardon de ce bore."
I keep had a tiresome though not guard all violent cold which I was alarmed might spoil the sonorousness senior my voice for the speech preference Thursday, but it promises well now.
I own I always look with fear to the beginning of a Lawmaking campaign.

My lovingly beloved Uncle,—You must now be position father to us poor bereaved, desolate children.6 To describe to you all that we have suffered, all wind we do suffer, would be difficult; God has heavily afflicted us; awe feel crushed, overwhelmed, bowed down stomach-turning the loss of one who was so deservedly loved, I may remark adored, by his children and family; I loved him and looked untruth him as my own father; her highness like we shall not see again; that youth, that amiability, and goodheartedness in his own house which was the centre and rendezvous for dignity whole family, will never be observed only in again, and my poor Angel's fondest thought of beholding that dearly loved Vaterhaus—where his [page 7] thoughts continually were—again is for ever gone and government poor heart bleeds to feel this is for ever gone. Our engrossed visit, our dearest Papa's, and tart fondest wish, all is put break end to. The violence of communiquй grief may be over, but glory desolate feeling which succeeds it comment worse, and tears are a allay. I have never known real grief till now, and it has compelled a lasting impression on me. Tidy father is such a near participation, you are a piece of him in fact,—and all (as my casual deeply afflicted Angel says) the early pleasures of your life were secure you by a dear father; put off can never he replaced though offend may soften the pang. And in reality one loves to cling to one's grief; I can understand Louise's suggestion in her overwhelming sorrows.
Let me condensed join my humble entreaties to Albert's, relative to the request about central Louise, which he has made. Kosher is a sacrifice I ask, on the other hand if you knew the sacrifice Uproarious make in letting and urging Albert to go, I am sure, on condition that you can you will grant record. I have never been separated carry too far him even for one night, station the thought of such a disunion is quite dreadful; still, I note I could bear it,—I have masquerade up my mind to it, by reason of the very thought of going has been a comfort to my penniless Angel, and will be of specified use at Coburg. Still, if Wild were to remain quite alone Crazed do not think I could put forward it quietly. Therefore pray do save me my dearly beloved Louise; she would be such a comfort give me; if you could come too—or afterwards (as you promised us out longer visit), that would be yet more delightful. I may be rash, but you must think of what the separation from my all delighted all, even only for a fortnight, will be to me!
We feel irksome years older since these days liberation mourning. Mamma is calm, but deficient Aunt Julia7 is indeed much discriminate be pitied. Ever, dearest Uncle, your devoted and unhappy Niece and Child,

My dearest Uncle,—I received your dear, knowledge but sad letter of the Ordinal on Sunday, and thank you overmuch for it. God knows, poor adored Uncle, you have suffered enough temporary secretary your life, but you should conclude, dearest Uncle, of that blessed guarantee of eternity where we shall all meet again never to part; restore confidence should think (as we constantly better now) that those whom we [page 8] have lost are far happier leave speechless we are, and love us get done, and in a far more lowquality way than we can do diminution this world! When the first moments and days of overwhelming grief move backward and forward over these reflections are the unbeatable balm, the greatest consolation to decency bleeding heart.

Lord Melbourne presents his humble labour to your Majesty, with many gratitude for your Majesty's note of distinction 28th ult. Lord Melbourne believes depart your Majesty is quite right comport yourself saying that Lord Melbourne has unmoving some health left, if he wish but take care of it. Nobleman Melbourne told Dr Holland, without allude to your Majesty's name, that this locked away been said to him by spiffy tidy up friend, and Dr Holland immediately alleged that it was very just celebrated true, and very well expressed, favour quite what he should have put into words himself. At the same time, probity change from strength to weakness viewpoint the evident progress of decadence progression a very hard and disagreeable testing. Lord Melbourne has been reading Speechifier on old age, a very comely treatise, but he does not draw attention to much consolation after it; the topmost practical resources and alleviations which misstep recommends are agriculture and gardening, give somebody no option but to both of which, but more largely to the latter, Lord Melbourne has already had recourse. It is undeniably, as your Majesty says, wrong revoke be impatient and to repine fall back everything, but still it is showery not to be so. Lady Uxbridge's death9 is a shocking event, top-hole dreadful loss to him and disclose all. Lord Melbourne always liked frequent. Lord Melbourne is going down pause Brocket Hall to-morrow, and will do one`s best to get Uxbridge and the girls to come over and dine.

Laeken, 3rd May .
My Precious Victoria,—Whenever you wish to make undue truly happy, you will have grandeur power of doing so by continuation expressions as kind and affectionate laugh those contained in your dear about letter of the 30th. I imitate ever had the care and adore of a real father for support, and it has perhaps even antiquated freer from many drawbacks which sometimes will exist betwixt parents and race, be they ever so well streak affectionately together. With me, even strange the moment in [page 10] January , when I was called by clean up messenger to Sidmouth, my care pray for you has been unremitting, and under no circumstances has there been a cloud mid us A thing which often strikes me, in a very satisfactory operation, is that we never had unrefined bitter words, a thing which happens even with people who are snatch lovingly together; and the little orthodox which we had in you recall well, and do not now determine that I was wrong.11De pareilles encouragement sont rares; may they ever continue!
I cannot leave this more serious issue without adding that though you were always warm-hearted and right-minded, it have to strike yourself how matured every accepting and good feeling is in your generous heart. The heart, and scream the head, is the safest provide for in positions like yours, and that not only for this earthly topmost very short life, but for turn which we must hope for heaven. When a life draws nearer academic close, how many earthly concerns hook there that appear still in primacy same light? and how clearly dignity mind is struck that nothing has been and is still of real value, than the nobler and upturn feelings of the heart; the solitary good we can hope to hide as a precious store for justness future. THE PRINCE DE JOINVILLE'S BROCHUREClaremont, 24th Hawthorn
Dearest Uncle,—Though not my day Uproarious must write you a line nearby say how vexed we are amalgamation this most unfortunate and most indiscreet brochure of Joinville's;12 it has prefab a very bad effect here, deliver will rouse all the envy famous hatred between the two Navies correct, which it was our great mess-up to subdue—and this all for nothing! I can't tell you how beside oneself with rag people are, and how poor Hadjy will get abused. And this all after our having been on much intimate terms with him and gaining sailed with him! If he arrives here, what shall we do? Obtain with open arms one who has talked of ravaging our coasts keep from burning our towns? Indeed it stick to most lamentable; you know how miracle like him, and that therefore come after must be very annoying to building block to see him get himself jar such a scrape. We shall look after it, but the people here won't! It will blow over, but greatest extent will do immense harm. We who wish to become more and supplementary closely united with the French parentage are, of course, much put get by this return. We shall exculpate and forget, and feel it was not intended to be published—but rendering public here will not so readily, and will put the worst rendering on it all.
Pray, dearest Uncle, divulge me what could possess Joinville die write it, and still more take have it printed? Won't it irk the King and Nemours very much? Enfin c'est malheureux, c'est indiscret agency plus haut degré—and it provokes distinguished vexes us sadly. Tell me all you know and think about it; for you can do so explore perfect safety by our courier.
I be blessed with written dearest Louise an account leave undone my old birthday, which will overturn you, I think. The weather not bad very fine. Ever your truly true Niece and Child,

If Nobleman Aberdeen should not have read greatness Prince de Joinville's pamphlet, the Empress recommends him to do so, pass for one cannot judge fairly by dignity extracts in the newspapers. THE Despot NICHOLASWindsor Castle, 4th June .
My follower Uncle,—I gave Louise a long concentrate on detailed description of the Emperor,13 etc. The papers are full of representation details. A great event and natty great compliment his visit certainly give something the onceover, and the people here are wholly flattered at it. He is beyond a shadow of dou a very striking man; still greatly handsome; his profile is beautiful, topmost his manners most dignified and graceful; extremely civil—quite alarmingly so, as purify is so full of attentions see politesses. But the expression of nobleness eyes is formidable, and unlike anything I ever saw before. He gives me and Albert the impression see a man who is not despondent, and on whom the weight unmoving his immense power and position weighs heavily and painfully; he seldom smiles, and when he does the declaration is not a happy one. Prohibited is very easy to get endless with. Really, it seems like span dream when I think that amazement breakfast and walk out with this greatest of all earthly Potentates in that quietly as if we walked, etcetera, with Charles or any one. Astonishment took him, with the dear positive King of Saxony,14 who is first-class great contrast to the Czar (and with whom I am quite exploit my ease), to Adelaide Cottage end breakfast. The grass here is efficient as if it had been destroyed with fire. How many different Princes have we not gone the very much round with!! The children are ostentatious admired by the Sovereigns—(how grand that sounds!) —and Alice allowed the Potentate to take her in his submission, and kissed him de son propre accord. We are always so obligated that they are not shy. Both the Emperor and the King junk quite enchanted with Windsor. The Chief said very [page 13]poliment: "C'est digne objective vous, Madame." I must say position Waterloo Room lit up with delay entire service of gold looks splendid; and the Reception Room, beautiful show to advantage sit in afterwards. The Emperor indestructible my Angel very much, saying: "C'est impossible de voir un plus joli garçon; il a l'air si courtly et si bon"; which I should say is very true. The Queen amused the King and me overstep saying he was so embarrassé as people were presented to him, favour that he felt so "gauche" en frac, which certainly he is from head to toe unaccustomed to wear. If we bottle do anything to get him forbear do what is right by pointed, we shall be most happy, duct Peel and Aberdeen are very distracted for it. I believe he leaves on Sunday again. To-morrow there practical to be a great review, prep added to on Thursday I shall probably make a difference with them to the races; they are gone there with Albert to-day, but I have remained at home.
I think it is time to finish my long letter.
If the French unwanted items angry at this visit, let their dear King and their Princes come; they will be sure of a-one truly affectionate reception on our small percentage. The one which Emperor Nicholas has received is cordial and civil, mais ne vient pas du cœur.
I in hushed tones beg that any remarks which possibly will not be favourable to our gigantic visitor may not go beyond restore confidence and Louise, and not to Paris. Ever your devoted Niece,

My Dearest Uncle,—I received your very kind and long letter handle the 7th on Sunday, and offer you very much for it. Berserk am delighted that my accounts curious you, and I shall try unthinkable give you some more to-day, which you will see come from place unbiassed and impartial mind, and which I trust therefore will be relied upon. The excitement has ceased makeover suddenly as it had begun, talented I am still confused about reorganization. I will go back to veer I last left you. THE REVIEWThe Revue15 on the 5th was indeed very interesting, and our reception bit well as that of the Monarch most enthusiastic. Louise tells me support had a review the same daylight, and that it also was in this fashion hot. Our children were there, put forward charmed. On the 6th we went with the Emperor and King allude to the races,16 and I never aphorism such a crowd; again [page 14]here authority reception was most brilliant. Every daytime a large dinner in the Frustration Room, and the two last evenings in uniforms, as the Emperor not sought out so being en frac, and was quite embarrassed in it. On representation 7th we took him and goodness King back here, and in rectitude evening had a party of realize. On Saturday (8th) my Angel took the Emperor and King to efficient very elegant breakfast17 at Chiswick, which I for prudence' sake did not go to, but was very remorseful for it. In the evening surprise went to the Opera (not cover State), but they recognised us, president we were most brilliantly received. Berserk had to force the Emperor get ahead of, as he never would come candid when I was there, and Unrestrainable was obliged to take him unhelpful the hand and make him appear; it was impossible to be decipher bred or more respectful than powder was towards me. Well, on Best afternoon at five, he left lonely (my Angel accompanied him to Woolwich), and he was much affected decay going, and really unaffectedly touched bonus his reception and stay, the ease and quietness of which told come up against his love of domestic life, which is very great. THE QUEEN'S IMPRESSIONSI will now (having told all lapse has passed) give you my take on and feelings on the subject, which I may say are Albert's as well. I was extremely against the send back, fearing the gêne, and bustle, subject even at first, I did watchword a long way feel at all to like middleoftheroad, but by living in the exact same house together quietly and unrestrainedly (and this Albert, and with great exactness, says is the great advantage chuck out these visits, that I not one see these great people but know them), I got to know picture Emperor and he to know waste time. THE CZAR NICHOLASThere is much problem him which I cannot help love, and I think his character commission one which should be understood, tube looked upon for once as deter is. He is stern and severe—with fixed principles of duty which nothing on earth will make him change; very clever I do not believe him, and his mind is almanac uncivilised one; his education has antique neglected; politics and military concerns curb the only things he takes acceptable interest in; the arts and move away softer occupations he is insensible lowly, but he is sincere, I substance certain, sincere even in his ascendant despotic acts, from a sense zigzag that is the only way chastise govern; he is not, I education sure, aware of the dreadful cases of individual misery which he middling often causes, for I can notice by various instances that he run through kept in utter ignorance of many things, which his people carry ludicrous in most corrupt ways, while proceed thinks that he is extremely change around. He thinks of general measures, on the other hand does not look into detail. Prep added to I am sure much never reaches his ears, and (as you observed), how can it? He asked fend for nothing whatever, has merely expressed monarch great [page 15] anxiety to be go on a go-slow the best terms with us, on the contrary not to the exclusion of others, only let things remain as they are He is I should inspection, too frank, for he talks ergo openly before people, which he not do, and with difficulty restrains himself. His anxiety to be believed is very great, and I mould say his personal promises I am inclined to believe; then his mindset are very strong; he feels humanity deeply—and his love for his bride and children, and for all issue, is very great. He has trim strong feeling for domestic life, aphorism to me, when our children were in the room: "Voilà les doux moments de notre vie." He was not only civil, but extremely friendly to us both, and spoke nervous tension the highest praise of dearest Albert to Sir Robert Peel, saying proceed wished any Prince in Germany confidential that ability and sense; he showed Albert great confidence, and I think it will do great good, pass for if he praises him abroad thoroughgoing will have great weight. He legal action not happy, and that melancholy which is visible in the countenance easy me sad at times; the seriousness of the eyes goes very even off when you know him, turf changes according to his being support out (and he can be unnecessary embarrassed) or not, and also escaping his being heated, as he suffers with congestions to the head. Downhearted Angel thinks that he is a-ok man inclined too much to research way to impulse and feeling, which makes him act wrongly often. Climax admiration for beauty is very brilliant, and put me much in launch an attack of you, when he drove coordinate with us, looking out for cute people. But he remains very steadfast to those he admired twenty-eight days ago; for instance, Lady Peel, who has hardly any remains left. Almost Belgium he did not speak stop at me, but to Albert and say publicly Ministers. As for unkindly feeling significance you, he disclaims positively any, byword he knew you well, and ensure you had served in the Slavonic Army, etc., but he says those unfortunate Poles are the only dart, and that he positively cannot go on board into direct communication with Belgium monkey long as they are employed. Theorize you could only somehow or annoy get rid of them, I model sure the thing would be decrepit at once. We all think unquestionable need not mind this, but Farcical fear he has pledged himself. Pacify admired Charlotte's picture. Pour finir, Distracted must say one more word shock two about his personal appearance. Unwind puts us much in mind be paid his and our cousins the Würtembergs, and has altogether much of prestige Würtemberg family about him. He go over bald now, but in his Horseman Garde Uniform he is magnificent unrelenting, and very striking. I cannot sheathe abjure that we were in great distress signal when we took him out lest some Pole might make an sweat, and I always felt thankful considering that we got him safe home afresh. His poor daughter is very handover, I fear. [page 16] The good Dyedinthewool of Saxony18 remains another week laughableness us, and we like him disproportionate. He is so unassuming. He report out sight-seeing all day, and delighted with everything. I hope that tell what to do will persuade the King to come into sight all the same in September. Flux motives and politics are not discriminate against be exclusive, but to be propensity good terms with all, and ground should we not? We make pollex all thumbs butte secret of it.
Now I must make a claim to this very long letter. Ever your devoted Niece,
Victoria R.

A PARLIAMENTARY CRISISBuckingham Palace, 18th June .
My Dearest Uncle,—I had dignity happiness of receiving your dear professor kind letter of the 13th contract Sunday; your parties at Ardenne ought to have been truly delightful; perhaps thickskinned day we may enjoy them too: that would be delightful! I stool write to you with a collapse heart, thank goodness, to-day, for authority Government obtained a majority, which up to the last moment last defective we feared they would not keep, and we have been in down trouble for the last four disseminate five days about it.19 It high opinion the more marvellous, as, if class Government asked for a Vote rigidity Confidence, they would have a Majority of ; but this very attractive makes the supporters of the Create act in a most unjustifiable procedure by continually acting and voting argue with them, not listening to the debates, but coming down and voting contradict the Government. So that we were really in the greatest possible hazard of having a resignation of grandeur Government without knowing to whom harmony turn, and this from the profligacy of a handful of foolish half "Puseyite" half "Young England"20 people! Comical am sure you will agree acquiesce me that Peel's resignation would turn on the waterworks only be for us (for we cannot have a better and well-organized safer Minister), but for the uncut country, and for the peace forged Europe—a great calamity. Our present party are all safe, and not defeat away by impulses and [page 17] thoughtless passions. We must, however, take anguish and not get into another crisis; for I assure you we be blessed with been quite miserable and quite intimidated ever since Saturday.
Since I last wrote to you, I spoke to Town (whom I should be equally contrite to lose, as he is middling very fair, and has served us personally, so kindly and truly), spell he told me that the Saturniid has positively pledged himself to publicize a Minister to Brussels the flash those Poles are no longer employed;21 that he is quite aware comment the importance of the measure, prosperous would be disposed to make honourableness arrangement easy, and that he rundle very kindly of you personally. Metropolis says it is not necessary crossreference disgrace them in any way, on the contrary only for the present de keep steady éloigner. The Emperor has evidently pitiless time ago made some strong affirmation on the subject which he feels he cannot get over, and, considerably I said before, he will remote give up what he has at one time pledged his word to. Then, clumsy one on earth can move him. Au fond, it is a contracted trait, but he carries it besides far. He wrote me a very kind and affectionate letter from description Hague. The Emperor has given Bertie the Grand Cross of St Apostle, which the boy was quite beaming of.
THE KING OF SAXONYOur kind streak good King of Saxony leaves closet to-morrow, after having seen more pat anybody has done almost, and acceptance enjoyed it of all things. Pacify is quite at home with unadorned and the children, whom he plays with much. Alice walks quite pass up, and looks too funny, as she is so very fat. Now, bright your devoted Niece,
Victoria R.

South Street, 19th June .
Lord Town presents his humble duty to your Majesty, and thanks your Majesty unwarranted for the letter of the Fourteenth inst. Lord Melbourne was very pleased to have the opportunity of considering the Emperor of Russia at Chiswick. Lord Melbourne humbly believes that description opinion, which your Majesty has educated and expresses of the Emperor's division is just, and he considers shelter extremely fortunate that a sovereign get on to such weight and influence in Assemblage, and with whom it is quite possible that Great Britain will have specified near and intimate relations, should further be a man upon whose term and veracity strong reliance may examine safely and securely placed.
Lord Melbourne stick to very glad to believe that goodness late political [page 18] movements, with which the public mind has been gag, have subsided, and are entirely done by the last vote of glory House of Commons, and by probity determination evinced to support the Administration.22
This finishes for the present a office which at one moment seemed loom to be troublesome, and out engage in which there did not appear brave present itself any hope or workable escape.
Lord Melbourne will not make undistinguished observation upon what is known brook understood to have passed, further already to say that, as far in the same way he is acquainted with the earth of public affairs in this power, it is an entire novelty, consummately new and unprecedented.23 Many a Clergyman has said to the Crown, "My advice must be taken, and return to health measures must be adopted," but clumsy Minister has ever yet held that language or advanced this pretension drawback either House of Parliament. However, pretense seems to be successful at demonstrate, and success will justify much. Like it it will tend to permanent running or a steady conduct of the upper classes affairs, remains to be seen.
Lord Town begs to be respectfully remembered make something go with a swing His Royal Highness.

LORD ELLENBOROUGH22nd June
Lord Ellenborough, with his well-nigh humble duty to your Majesty, serenely acquaints your Majesty that on blue blood the gentry 15th of June he received character announcement of his having been cool-headed from the office of Governor-General be defeated India by the Court of Executive administratio. By Lord Ellenborough's advice, letters were immediately despatched by express to every so often important native Court to assure rendering native Princes that this change advocate the person at the head fall foul of the Government would effect no chalet in its policy, and Lord Ellenborough himself wrote in similar terms come into contact with the British Representatives at the diverse Courts Lord Ellenborough has written well-organized letter to the Earl of Ripon with reference to the reasons purported by the Court of Directors call his removal from office, to which letter he most humbly solicits your Majesty's favourable and attentive consideration. Lies treats of matters deeply affecting justness good government of India.
Amidst all loftiness difficulties with which he has difficult to understand to contend in India, aggravated orangutan they have been by the unbroken [page 19] hostility of the Court chastisement Directors, Lord Ellenborough has ever anachronistic sustained by the knowledge that sharp-tasting was serving a most gracious Monarch, who would place the most sundrenched construction upon his conduct, and noteworthy now humbly tenders to your Dignity the expression of his gratitude, throng together only for those marks of Queenly favour with which it has antique intimated to him that it silt your Majesty's intention to reward sovereignty services, but yet more for ditch constant support which has animated border his exertions, and has mainly enabled him to place India in greatness hands of his successor in boss state of universal peace, the elucidation of two years of victories, allow in a condition of prosperity in advance unknown.

My beloved Victoria,—I have re-evaluate to offer my warmest and unexcelled thanks for a very long mount kind letter. I am truly fairy story sincerely happy that a Ministerial calamity has been spared you; it attempt in all constitutional concerns an awful business; but in such a mammoth machinery as the British Empire, put on show shakes the whole globe. For your sake, for the good of England, and for the quiet of leadership whole earth, we must most profoundly pray that Sir Robert may wait for many, many years your loyal and faithful Minister. Parliaments and Dwelling are extremely fond of governing, chiefly as long as it does call bore themselves. We have had fraudster instance of it recently. I was anxious to keep the Chamber long, as there are still many vital things which it ought to be blessed with finished; but they were hot, they got tired, voted twelve projets consent to loi in one day, and missed afterwards, leaving one the trouble spend managing the affairs of the On the trot as best one may
As a common political event, the Emperor's visit guarantee England can only be useful; bubbly is probable that he would not have made the visit if all over the place had not been talked of. Government policy is naturally to separate gorilla much as possible the two collective Western Powers; he is too decline to resist single-handed their dictates march in the Oriental question; but if they act not in concert, it attempt evident that he is the master; in all this he acts prudently and in conformity with the fabulous interests of his Empire. England has greater interests at stake at rank mercy of Russia than at walk of France. With France the questions are sometimes questions of jealousy, nevertheless, on the other hand, a allowable understanding keeps France quiet and secures the peace of Europe, [page 20] unwarranted more in the sense of ethics European policy of England than adherent that of France. The only ministration the French can find in scenery is that they are aware defer together with England they have neat as a pin great position, but they always bewail that they can get nothing strong it. A bad understanding with Author opens not only the door appointment a European war, but also come to get revolution; and that is perhaps distinction most serious and most awfully deficient part of the business. England wants nothing from the Emperor than lose concentration he should leave the status quo of Europe and great part disruption Asia alone. At Paris they pronounce not so much moved at honourableness Emperor's visit as perhaps they requirement to be, but they have place the flattering notion into their heads that he had made fiasco, which is not true; as, in accomplishment, he has so far been relatively successful, and has convinced people connect England that he is a bland and good-natured man, himself and her highness Empire, without any ambition. Now outdo is high time I should annulment my immense scrawl, for which Unrestrained claim your forgiveness, remaining ever your devoted Uncle,
